America was the first nation to establish National Parks, promoting the idea that natural wonders belong to all citizens. The Grand Canyon became a National Park in 1919. Searching for gold, (pssst...your own piece of gold can be found in one of our featured categories below) the Spanish were the first Europeans to discover the Grand Canyon in 1540. The first US citizens to see the Canyon were fur trappers in 1826. The Canyon is 277 miles long and 5,000 to 8,000 feet deep, depending if you're on the South or North rim.
If you want to hike the many trails in the Canyon and end up at the Colorado river...remember this rule of thumb "tidbit"...the temperature at the bottom of the Canyon is the same as it is in Phoenix during spring and summer months.
